Formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1999, The National have received widespread critical acclaim for their music, right from the release of their very first album. In recent years, that critical acclaim has gone hand in hand with much commercial success too. The National is comprised of vocalist Matt Berninger and, rather unusually, two sets of brothers, Aaron and Bryce Desner and Scott and Bryan Devendorf. The band's sound has been influenced by a diverse mix of musical styles including indie rock, Britpop and country-rock.The National's self-titled debut album was released independently in 2001 via Brassland Records. Brassland was actually founded in that same year in the city of New York by brothers Aaron and Bryce Desner of The National. The Brassland label also released the band's second album, Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, in 2002. Both of these first two albums from The National were awarded much critical praise from the music press, leading to the band being signed to the Beggars Banquet record label in 2004. The resulting album, Alligator, was included on many album of the year lists by publications such as The Los Angeles Times and NME. This increased exposure for The National resulted in Alligator selling in excess of 200,000 copies worldwide. The year 2007 saw the debut of The National in album charts across the world with the release, Boxer, charting in countries such as the United States, Ireland and the UK. Tracks from Boxer featured on the soundtracks of hit television shows including Chuck, One Tree Hill and House. The band has also recorded songs for the TV series Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire. In 2010, The National recorded their most successful album up until that point. High Violet was a Top Five hit on the UK album chart and reached number three in both Ireland and the US. This success was followed in 2013 with the album, Trouble Will Find Me, which broke into the top three of album charts across the globe. In addition to headlining their own successful tours, The National have supported other artists such as R.E.M.. They have also performed at many international music festivals including Glastonbury, T in the Park, Reading and Lollapalooza. In 2011, the band were nominated for the International Breakthrough Act BRIT Award.
